What might this procedure do for me?

Removal of breast tissue and skin from the breasts makes them smaller, lighter and firmer. Women whose breasts are large causing neck pain, back pain, shoulder grooving; rashes under the breast or who feel uncomfortable or self-conscious will benefit from this procedure.

How long does the surgery take?

The surgery will take about 3-1/2 hours.

What will my recovery be like?

Your breasts will feel uncomfortable for 2-7 days. You will wear a gauze wrap for 3 days and gauze bandages for 1-2 weeks.

Will I have restrictions after the procedure?

You should avoid strenuous activity for about 2 weeks.

When will I be back to work?

You will be able to return to work in 1-2 weeks.

Where is the surgery performed?

Dr. Hess performs the majority of his procedures at Northwest Hospital.

What type of anesthesia is used?

General anesthesia (asleep) is used most commonly.

Where will the scars be?

The scars will be located around the areola (which can be made smaller) vertically down to the breast crease. All scars are hidden in a bra or bathing suit. Please see the following page, Breast Reduction Surgical Description.

What are the risks?

While complications are rare, The risks include infection, bleeding and scarring, as with all surgical procedures. Delayed healing (some skin may require additional dressings until healed and numbing or delayed healing of the nipple area are specific to this procedure.

Patients must quit smoking 4 weeks prior to surgery and remain smoke-free for 3 weeks post-surgery!
