Face Lift

Frequently Asked Questions

What might this procedure do for me?

This procedure improves the most visible signs of aging in the face by removing excess fat, tightening the underlying muscles and redrawing the skin of your face and neck. Those patients with deep creases between the nose and mouth, jowls (loose skin on both sides of the chin) loose skin and/or excess fat in the neck might benefit from this procedure.

How long do the results last?

This procedure will turn back the clock so you will always look better than if you had not had the procedure. Most patients only have one lift, however some patients do elect a second procedure usually at 10-15 years.

How long is the surgery?

The surgery takes about 3-1/2 hours.

What will my recovery be like?

You will experience mild discomfort for several days following surgery. You will have a loose dressing around your head for one day following surgery.

Will I have restrictions after the procedure?

You should avoid activities that cause bending or straining for 3 days. You should avoid strenuous activity for 2 weeks (walking and mild stretching are fine. You will need to limit your sun exposure for 2 months (sunblock and hats are fine).

When will I be back to work?

You will be able to return to work in 10-14 days. Many patients prefer to use camouflage makeup to hide the bruising.

Where is the surgery performed?

Dr. Hess performs the majority of his procedures at Northwest Hospital.

What type of anesthesia is used?

General anesthesia (asleep) is the choice of most patients although local with IV sedation by an Anesthesiologist may also be selected.

Where will the scars be?

The scars will be in front of and behind the ears. If the neck needs work, a small scar may be found under the chin. Scars will otherwise be hidden in the hair.

What are the risks?

Complications are infrequent and usually minor. The risks include infection, bleeding and scarring, as with all surgical procedures.

The patient needs to quit smoking 2 weeks prior to surgery and remain smoke-free for 2 weeks post surgery.
